Abstract
1,195,795. Liquid filtering. HYDROMATION ENG. CO. 17 July, '1968, No. 33936/68. Heading B1D. A filter bed of granular plastics or wood saw dust, through which liquid normally flows from inlet pipes 84 to outlet pipes 87, is .periodically cleaned by fluidising the bed with additional clean or unfiltered liquid and forcing the resulting slurry to flow 'round a circuit including a wedgewire screen 81, through which liquid and filtered solids are withdrawn but which retains the filter medium. In Fig. 8, the screen 81 is in the filter tank 80, and pump ,103 delivers liquid to injection pump 97 to circulate the slurry. In Figs. 1 to 7, not shown, the screen (54) is located outside .the filter tank, and is of cylindrical shape and wedgwire construction, flow being inwards or outwards (Figs. 7, 5). Centrifugal pump (47) forces the .slurry round circuit (45, 46, 47, 50 55, 41) while pump (30), which normally delivers unfiltered liquid from tank (33), delivers filtered liquid from tank (37) to make up for liquid leaving the screen through outlet (58). This liquid is separated from the filtered solids by settling in tank (59). Outlet pipes (23), 87 are of helically wound wedgewire construction and closed at the tops, while inlet .pipes (16), 84 are perforated along one side (Fig. 4) and open at the top. At the beginning of a filtration cycle, the filter .tank (11), 80 fills with liquid and flow is downwards through the bed, later the flow is radial. The bed may be polyvinyl chloride .particles with pock marked surfaces, grown in an emulsion, spherical particles of foamed polystyrene, shredded polyethylene, polypropylene or .sawdust.
