963,271. Filters ; gravity separation apparatus. HEAD WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. July 25, 1962 [July 26, 1961], No. 27158/61. Heading BID. Liquid is continuously passed downwards from the top of a substantially vertical column, and withdrawn independently through a plurality of filter screens or groups of filter screens included in or comprising the wall of the column, foreign matter being withdrawn at the bottom of the column. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2) a vertical tubular casing 1 having liquid inlet 2 and sedimented solid outlet 4 is divided into two zones by a column comprising filter screens 5. The annular space between casing and column is divided into compartments 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP> by T-section spacing members 8 extending between the outer perimeter of screens 5 and the inner surface of the casing, each compartment is fitted with intake and outlet flanged pipe connections 11, 12. Solid containing liquid, preferably treated with e.g. powdered coke or fly-ash to conglomerate oil, enters at 2. Heavy solids sedimentate down the interior of columnar screens 5 to the bottom of the casing, while fine solids are filtered through the screen by withdrawing filtrate through outlets 12 the pressure drop so produced aiding sedimentation within the column. At predetermined intervals outlet 12 in one of compartments 10, 10<SP>1</SP> is closed and water pumped in through 11 to backwash solids from the screens, filtration meanwhile continuing in the other compartments. This operation is repeated in turn for each compartment. In further embodiment (not shown), the annular space between casing and column is divided into axially extending compartments by radial plates projecting from the filter screens. Two concentric groups of columnar screens may be provided.
