Abstract

1,164,416. Water filter. METALLGESELLSOHAFT A.G. 6 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967; 28 Oct., 1967], No. 10970/68. Heading B1D. [Also in Division Cl] A downward flow filter for turbid water comprises successive layers 17, 16, 15 of granular media, whose densities increase and whose average grain sizes decrease downwards, with up to 40% - of particles in adjacent layers being within a common size range, in the case of each pair of layers. The upper layer is activated carbon, the bottom layer is gravel or marble chips and the intermediate layer may be a denser type of active carbon, anthracite or ion exchange material. Typical respective grain size ranges are 0.5 to 4 mm., 0.8 to 1.5 mm. and 1 to 3 mm. Typical layer thicknesses are given. The bottom layer 15 rests on a coarser gravel draining bed or on a slotted plate 4. The inlet conduit 18 delivers water uniformly over the upper surface of the layer 17. The filter is cleaned by backwashing, the layers settling back afterwards by virtue of their different densities. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a filter with only two layers, of carbon and gravel.
