Abstract

Impurities from oils are stripped by distn. with an auxiliary agent by mixing the auxiliary agent, at a high temp. and under a press. higher than that at which it would boil, with the prod. to be purified, which is substantially at the same temp. and press. and then submitting the mixt. to a very much lower press. so that spontaneous sepn. occurs. The press. to achieve mutual molecular soln. is typically about 50 atmospheres and the temp. about 220 degrees C. The press. is reduced to about 1 to 30 torr to achieve sepn. The auxiliary agent is typically water or superheated steam. The appts. for carrying out the process incorporates a mixer an expansion chamber and a separator together with pipes, pumps and heat exchangers. Method is specif. used for purifying oils which may be mineral oils or oils to be used in food prods. The sepn. is better than that achieved by existing methods in which the auxiliary agent is injected in the gaseous phase because of the achievement of complete mutual molecular soln. between the auxiliary agent and the prod. to be treated, ensuring intimate contact. The prod. is exposed to high temp. for only a short time. The appts. can be smaller than existing appts. and contains only a small quantity of prod. allowing rapid changing of product if necessary.
