Abstract

Carbon-based materials having a network of intercommunicating open cells are coated by successively depositing on the walls of the cells thin layers of a material formed by pyrolysis of a liquid resin. The resin is pref. a phenolic or furan resin and pref. contains powdered carbon, esp. colloidal graphite. The process combines the advantages of the 2 known processes for effecting such coatings, namely the liquid impregnation process and gas infiltration process, and overcomes the drawbacks associated with those processes, viz thickening of the liquid compsn. resulting in the separation of fillers and premature clogging of large pores. Used for prodn. of carbon felts.
