Abstract

A method of producing a diaphragm for electrolytic cells, comprising the operations of: a) form a suspension of fibrous asbestos, b) placing a foraminous cathode element in said suspension and depositing a relatively uniform layer of asbestos on said cathode element by applying a vacuum, c) removing said coated cathode element from said suspension and vacuum drying said element, d) forming a suspension of thermoplastic polymer particles, e) introducing said coated cathodic element in said suspension, f) impregnating the asbestos coating of said cathodic element with thermoplastic polymer particles by applying a vacuum, g) removing the cathode element and subjecting it to a temperature sufficient for the thermoplastic polymer particles to melt, joining together the adjacent asbestos fibers, h) cooling said cathode element to obtain a cathode element coated with asbestos that is impregnated with a discontinuous polymeric material.
