Abstract

Electron beam welding appts., using a chamber (I) fitted with an electron gun supplying a focussed beam, a pump creating a prim. vacuum, and at least one sealed housing in the wall for one end of a long round tube held by an expanding joint so the tube can be rotated to make a weld. The novelty is that the tube can be clamped and displaced w.r.t. the housing, and the other end of the tube is mounted in a second housing in a second chamber (II) in which the vacuum is identical to that in chamber (I). Chamber (II) is pref. connected to a pump so the vacuum in the bore of the tube is the same as in chamber (I). Chamber (II) is pref. identical to chamber (I) so that both ends of the long tube can be simultaneously welded. Suitable for welding plugs in the ends of long tubes used to hold fertile or fissile material, i.e. fuel rods.
