Abstract
Grooves are formed in at least one of the mating surfaces of members to be welded to facilitate inspection by X-rays of the extent of a weld. In electron beam welding the end cap 1 to the casing 2 of a nuclear fuel element, grooves 3 and 4 are formed in the end cap and the weld is satisfactory if the groove 3 is filled and the groove 4 is not. Inspection is effected by rotating the welded assembly 1, 2, feeding a film CD tangentially to the easing 2 at a speed equal to the peripheral speed of the casing 2 and directing an X-ray beam S at right angles to the film CD through the joint. The assembly 1, 2 may be of a magnesium-zirconium alloy.
