Abstract
777,661. Making heat exchangers; welding by fusion. STANDARD-THOMSON CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1955 [Aug. 30, 1954], No. 23301/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] A method of welding together a plurality of thin-walled, nested, metallic heat exchanges tubes to form a tube core comprises fitting an insert 12 within the end 14 of each tube and arc welding the contiguous edges of the nested tubes and inserts in an atmosphere of inert gas. such as argon or helium, the inserts 12 each having the same external shape as the interior of the tube ends and being made of the same metal as the tubes. Fig. 4 shows one arrangement in which a consumable or non-consumable electrode 20 passes through a tubular member 22 which directs an envelope 24 of gas around the arc and the end of the core as indicated. Alternatively the entire core may be immersed in the inert gas either under a hood or within an enclosed chamber. The core may be held in a fixture on a lathe with a suitable slip-ring for the electrical connection 16, one or more electrodes 20 then being moved across the face of the core as it revolves. In a further form, a hexagonal ferrule (Figs. 5, 6a, not shown), may be fitted over the end of each tube and is welded in position with the inserts 12.
