Abstract

The ram is locked by friction devices forced against the piston rod by air, liquid etc., under pressure. A tubular membrane of resilient material fits round the friction devices, and pressure is applied to the outside of it to press them against the rod. There can be a housing with two end portions and a cylinder portion, the membrane acting as a seal and forming the inner wall of a chamber enclosing it, and to which air or liquid under pressure is delivered via the cylinder portion. The membrane can have thickened flanged ends fitting in grooves in the end portions, or in the end faces of the cylinder portion, these faces instead fitting in the grooves in the end portions, and being held there by circlips.
