Abstract

The furnace has a first mould section whose cross-sectional area is larger than that of the ingot mould or moulds which open into the first section. A pool of molten metal is formed under slag in the first mould section by fusing the tip of an electrode having a cross-section at least as large as the total cross-section of the moulds. The metal pool is maintained in a molten condition and no skull is permitted to form during the simultaneous fusing and casting operations. To prevent solidification at the interface between the first mould section and the ingot moulds, refractory sleeves are used to thermally insulate the interface.
