Abstract

A sealing joint for the ends of drilling tubes is described. The ends of the tubes to be joined each have a shoulder (7, 8) and double chamfer (5, 9) (6, 10). a soft inelastic pressure ring (B) is placed between the ends of the tubes and a trapezoidal section sealing ring (A) surrounds the joint, the whole being contained within a cylindrical sleeve (C) of the same outside diameter as the tubes. This sleeve compresses the sealing ring against the chamfered faces of each tube and the whole forms a flexible joint permitting some misalignment of the tubes. A groove may be provided on the outer face of the sealing ring, for lubricant. The joint is simple to assemble, cheap and avoids damage to the ends of the tubes, despite the high loads fo the drilling process.
