Abstract

In the mfr. of expanded mineral particles by thermal treatment, particles 0.1-20mm. in size travelling continuously along a fluidised bed contg. a heating- and a cooling-zone are used, the fluidising agent being gas with a sufficiently high temp. to expose the interior of the particles to thermal shock, and the bed consisting of a porous element, sieve or grid. The hot gas is blown up through the grid upstream of the treatment zone, and a cooling gas is blown up through the grid at an intermediate point in the treatment zone; and a uniform temp. is maintained at the same transverse height across the grid. Method is esp. used in the prodn. of exfoliated vermiculite at 400-600 degrees C using hot gas at 1200-1400 degrees C; or expanded perlite by heating at 900-1000 degrees C using hot gas at 1200-1400 degrees C.
