Abstract

1417134 Shaped silicon carbide articles NIPPON OIL SEAL INDUSTRY CO Ltd 20 Nov 1972 53542/72 Heading C1A Shaped silicon carbide articles, e.g. for bearings, abrasives, electrical components, honeycomb matrices for heat exchangers for gas turbines, which have at least a layer of silicon carbide on their surface are formed by shaping articles made from carbon having a specific gravity of not more than 2À1 and a porosity of 20-40% and treating the shaped articles with silicon monoxide gas at 1800‹ C. to 2100‹ C. so as to silicon carbonize them. The porosity is the percentage ratio of the volume of the pores of a given material to that of all the material including the pores. A portion of the shaped carbon article may not be converted to silicon carbide and may subsequently be burned out in an oxidizing atmosphere. The carbon may have a coefficient of thermal expansion of 3 to 6 Î 10<SP>-6</SP>/‹ C.
