Abstract
1452652 Muffle furnaces FHD FURNACES Ltd 9 May 1975 [9 July 1974] 30420/74 Heading F4B A furnace for treating materials in continuous movement comprises an elongated gastight chamber and a hearth 6 over which passes a conveyor 7 for the materials to be treated, the conveyor being covered with a longitudinal refractory hood 11 which encloses a treatment zone, the heating means being outside the treatment zone. The refractory material has a high thermal conductivity and is inert to cracked ammonia and to endothermic and exothermic atmospheres. The refractory used is silicon-nitride-bonded silicon carbide and the hood is formed in sections joined together 'end-to-end'. The atmosphere of the treatment zone may be supplied through ducts 13 formed in the hood sections, or through a pipe housed in recesses in the hood sections. At the position between two different sections of the furnace, the section of the hood is formed with a depending ridge forming a radiation barrier (Fig. 4c, not shown).
