1398358 Expanding clay or shale HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DU NORD ET DU PASDE-CALAIS 10 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 22369/73 Heading C1A Silico-alumino calcareous granules (e.g. clay or shale) are expanded using sand to prevent binding, in a rotary furnace arranged so that the sand is injected into the expansion zone, and fitted with blowing and scraping devices near the inlet. The sand used may have a lower SiO 2 content than foundry sand and may be capable of expansion. Dune sand and ferruginous quarry sand are usually suitable. A small proportion of foundry sand may also be necessary. An excess of sand may be used so that a semi-light purified sand is obtained. The apparatus may be a rotary furnace having a plurality of pipes for injecting the sand, a means of blowing high pressure air against the inlet flange and a shaped water-cooled scraper near the inlet.
