Abstract

Porous or cellular foamed slag or other smelts are prepared by pouring the molten slag on to a bed of porous material, such as sand, aggregates of larger size, or honeycombed concrete while water is supplied in controllable amounts to the interior of the bed by a network of pipes buried in or arranged beneath the bed. The water passing to the jets may be individually controlled, or the jets may be arranged in groups. When the larger aggregates or porous concrete is employed, sufficient water to form a film on the surface may be supplied. A trough to which the slag is delivered may be arranged to bridge the bed and to run on rails, spouts in the trough being arranged to provide more even distribution. A series of beds may be arranged in steps so that the slag may pass as a cascade over the successive beds.
