Abstract

Mandrel for generating an internal channel in the mouth of a pipe joint socket. The pipe end is forced over a mandrel nose which enlarges the end to form the basic socket. An ancillary plunger can then be moved coaxially within the mandrel so that a collar on the plunger can compress an annular chamber contg. an elastic solid or a hydraulic fluid capped with an elastic membrane. The membrane is thus forced radially outwards deforming the socket wall. The membrane is profiled so that the central region is stiff enough to maintain a flat profile while relatively thin hinge zones distort preferentially along the edges of the chamber. The socket zone being deformed is enclosed by an external membrane beneath which coolant can be circulated to freeze the deformed socket wall to allow subsequent withdrawal without distortion. The plunger is reversed to allow the membrane to retract prior to withdrawal of the socket end. Compact design for expandable mandrel, can be made small enough for forming sockets on pipe of =75 mm dia.
