Abstract

The positive plate (1) is made of a lead alloy grid (11) and of a lead peroxide active paste (12). The plate (1) is covered, except at connecting tab (13), with an active material (12) retaining sheet made up of two sheets (14) of vinyl copolymer cloth. The negative plate (3) is similar to the positive plate (1) but it has negative active material (32) and no retaining sheets. A separator (2) is situated between the positive and negative plates (1, 3). This separator (3) has vertical square-section grooves and ridges at a pitch of 2-6 mm. The grooves allow a circulation of the electrolyte and gases during the electrochemical reaction. The plates (1, 3) and the separator (2) are maintained in contact with a pressure of 20 kilogrammes per square decimetre.
