Abstract

Gas-liq. heat exchanger, esp. cooling tower, for water consists of a series of slats arranged in a circle to form a cylinder, so orientated that air or gas flowing between them enters the cylinder tangentially. Inside the cylinder so formed are vertical standpipes with jets arranged tangential to the cylinder. Above the cylinder is a fan to induce air (or gas) motion in the tower. Into this water (or other liq) is pumped via jets from pump and tank. Liq. draining to the base is returned to the tank. The net effect is that air (or gas) migrates to the column centre and so leaves the tower at the top while the finely dispersed water droplets move in counter-current motion to the outside of the tower due to centrifugal force. Maximum heat exchange is thus achieved.
