Abstract

1467563 Degassing liquids HAMONSOBELCO SA 4 Feb 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 4665/ 75 Heading B1M [Also in Division F4] A tower 1 in which a liquid (e.g. water) is brought into contact with a gas (e.g. air) is encircled at its base by an annular chamber 10 in communication with the gas inlet 5 of the tower and comprising a closed outer wall 11 and a substantially horizontal upper wall 9, said upper wall having therein a plurality of apertures in each of which is mounted a blower 6 with its axis of rotation extending vertically. In the tower shown, atmospheric air is drawn by the blowers 6 into the chamber 10 from which it passes via inlet 5 into the tower wherein it flows upwardly in contact with water sprays 3. The contacting fluids may in contraflow relation (as shown) or in crossflow (Fig. 3). The tower may for example be used for cooling or degasifying the liquid by atmospheric air. The blowers 6 are preferably arranged around the tower in a circle or in two or more concentric circles wherein the blowers are relatively staggered, e.g. Fig. 2. In such an arrangement the blowers may vary in size from row to row, the larger blowers being in the outer row. Air flow direction is as shown by the arrows and may be assisted by a deflector 11a. Alternatively the wall 11 may be inclined to constitute the deflector. The wall 11 may be covered by a noise-attenuating panel.
