Abstract

Furfural is prepd. by hydrolysis of sugar cane waste or other prod. contg. hydrolysable pentosane in a series of hydrolysis vessels, with addn. of pressure regulator on the vapour line leaving the last vessel pref. there is a flow regulator on the feed line to the series of hydrolysis vessels. Pressure is kept constant in all the hydrolysis vessels, permitting optimisation of yield and redn. of vapour consumption. The concn. of furfural soln. leaving the hydrolysis vessels is increased, so that distn. is simpler.
