Abstract

The known prodn. of glutamic acid (I) or lysine (II) by fermentation of Brevibacterium, Corynbacterium, Micrococcus, or Microbacterium spp. is improved as follows (a) a neutral hydrolysate of molasses contg. glucose and fructose at 10 degrees is mixed with Ca(OH)2 to ppte. a fructose addn. product, (b) the remaining mother liq. is neutralised to eliminate Ca++ and the remaining liq. is used as the C source for the above fermentation. Method not only provides a very inexpensive source of fructose (a sweetening agent eg for diabetics but also does not alter the yields of (I) or (II) obtd. in the known fermentation above. In an example an invert sugar soln. at 0 degree was treated with 30% Ca(OH)2 (1 mole equiv). Sepd. adduct in H2O was neutralised with H2SO4 to give a soln. contg. fructose (50% yield) and only a trace of glucose.
