Abstract

Prodn. of DL-methionine (I) is by reacting (pref. for 1-3 hrs. at 30-60 degrees C.) 3-methylthiopropionaldehyde (II), HCN (or salt such as NaCN), and NH3 (or an aq. soln. of NH3 contng. an ammonium salt) to form 3-methylthio-1-amino propionitrile (III). Excess NH3 and volatile impurities are removed by applying a vacuum (pref. 200 mm. Hg.) at 30-60 degrees C. until the NH3 content is 5%. Volatile impurities are pref. eliminated by an alkaline wash and the NH3 is recovered for recycling by absorption in water. The resulting reaction mixture (two layers) is hydrolysed by H2SO4 at 30 degrees C. using a ratio of H2SO4 : (III) of 2.4 : 1 to 3 : 1, the product is then neutralised with aq. NH3 to give (I).
