Abstract

Fermentative prodn. of citric acid uses as substrate sugarbett molasses and/or date molasses. The micro-organism is Aspergillus niger strain 1015, 10577, 11414, 12846, 9142, 13794 or 26036, or Mucor piriformis 16296, or a mutant thereof. Pref. the substrate is treated with potassium ferrocyanide before culture, to remove trace heavy metals. Pref. the pH of the medium is adjusted during culture (pref. after 24 hrs.) to is not >3, esp. pH 2.7. Citric acid yields are high and oxalic acid by-prodn. is reduced, e.g. 95% of total acid produced is citric acid.
