Abstract
Ferritic stainless steel giving weld strengths comparable to the strength of the body of the metal has compsn. 0.05% max. C, 0.75% max. SI, 1.0-2.5% Mn, 10-19% Cr, 0.03% max N, 0.5% max Al, and Ti % from 5 x %C to 0.5, balance Fe. Effective Ti content is 0.05-0.2% where effective Ti = total Ti less 4 x %C + 24/7 x %N. The compsn. is modified for opt. working properties when some Ti is replaced by Nb so that (Nb + Ti) = from 5 x %C to 0.6%. Compared with prior art ferritic stainless steels the claimed alloys have increased Mn, Al, while C, Si, N concns. are limited. Used for components where mfr. involves machine forming and brazing, e.g. car exhausts, cooking utensils, cycle wheel-rims and handlebars. The steel has high strength at low temp. and high weld strength compared with prior art materials.
