Abstract

Solar radiation heats the air in a hot air balloon which consists of an outer transparent envelope (1), impermeable to air, which is thermally insulated by a layer of air between it and a second transparent and impermeable envelope (2). Inside the latter and separated from it by a layer of air is a matt black envelope (3) made from a material which absorbs solar radiation. The surface of the black envelope exposed to the sun could be varied to regulate the rate of ascent of the balloon through control of the heat absorbed. Those parts of the two outer envelopes which are in the shadow of the black envelope can be fitted with a metal film to reflect heat.
