Abstract

Pump comprising a hollow vessel made from twin concave shells fixed together and clamping a flexible elastic membrane which divides the vessel into two chambers. One chamber is connected via a 'T' fitting to a valved line from a reservoir of viscous material and to a discharge pipe fitted with a non-return valve. The other chamber is connected to a hydraulic or pneumatic circuit operating a negative/positive pressure swing sufficient to deform the membrane to draw viscous material into the vessel, and to expel the material from the chamber so that an equivalent volume exits via the non-return valve. For pumping material of 500 poise viscosity. Esp. suitable for pumping highly flammable or explosive material in doses to suit a moulding operation, e.g. for sticks of pyrogallol. No risk of sparks, no dead zone where material can over-age.
