Abstract

[Also in Division Fl] A pump, particularly for pumping blood in circuit with a living body, comprises a substantially spherical pumping vessel 1, closed with the exception of inlet and outlet conduits 2, 3 communicating with one hemisphere 1a thereof, the other hemisphere 1b being partially collapsible by applied external pressure, and the conduits including sections 2a, 2b also collapsible by applied pressure, all collapsible portions being sealed within individual pressure chambers, the pressure being applied in alternating sequence, the internal surfaces of the pump being of an inert material, and having no discontinuities. The pressurising fluid may be normal saline which is maintained sterile and of a suitable temperature. The interior surface of the pump may be of silicone rubber. In operation the outlet conduit 3 is closed by fluid pressure within chamber 12, and blood flows into the vessel 1. The conduit section 2b is then closed and the conduit 3 opened and pressure applied to chamber 6 to collapse hemisphere 1b and provide the pumping action. The speed and volume of the pumped blood may be controlled by plungers operated by pneumatically powered, adjustable rams, acting on the pressure fluid.
