Abstract

1,077,432. Surgical pumping apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 28, 1966 [May 13, 1965], No. 13527/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F1] Apparatus used to assist the natural heart action by pumping blood to and from the arteries at predetermined moments in the heart cycle, comprises a blood reservoir 12 open to a conduit 18 by which blood is ejected and withdrawn by the movement of a flexible diaphragm 10, the diaphragm being actuated by the movement of liquid 11 which is itself moved by compressed gas from a chamber 3 acting through a solenoid-operated valve 5 on a second diaphragm 38. The valve 5 allows the gas to exhaust periodically at a vent 46 to give the diaphragms a reciprocatory motion and a bleed valve 36 is provided to the reservoir 12. The apparatus includes sections 14, 15 of transparent plastics material and the conduit 18 leads to a cannula for connection to the fermoral artery. The liquid 11 may comprise saline solution. In use (Figure 3, not shown) the solenoid valve 5 is operated by switches (56, 57) which are controlled through timing devices (58, 59) by the patient's blood pressure. The diaphragm 38 and liquid 11 may be omitted from the apparatus so that the compressed gas operates directly on the diaphragm 10.
