Abstract

The mechanism is designed to make or break electrical connection between two conductors carrying high currents where the contact must be held under pressure to avoid damage due to arcing between the mating surfaces. The connection is made manually by moving the free part of the mechanism carrying one conductor through a suspended arc causing the fixed part to be engaged agains the pressure of a helical spring. Both elements carrying the mating surfaces are electrical conductors and of square cross-section, the moving part carrying suspension lugs at its centre of gravity and two short protruding axles on which the stirrup type lever system operates.
