Abstract
Storage of a material, more esp. a hazardous or radioactive material, e.g. a radioactive gas with a long half life such as Kr - 85, comprises enclosing it in a solid body as a result of bombarding the solid with ions of the material. In partic. the energy of bombardment is such as to achieve introduction of the material below the surface of the solid and to control the carrying away of this by atomisation so that the material remains in the solid. More esp., atomisation is carried out simultaneously with inclusion of the material so that the thickness of the solid increases. Where gases of long half life e.g. arising in the re-processing of nuclear fuel, must be stored for very long periods, e.g. 100 to 200 years or more, larger vols. can be stored than in comparable gas cylinders under pressure, using metals e.g. Cu, Ni resistant to corrosion from which little or no gas will be evolved below the metal m.pt.
