Abstract

956,555. Ionisation chambers. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Aug. 8, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 21175/59. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G6] An ionisation-type reaction detector comprises the electrodes 1, 2 of which the anode 1 has a coating 15 which emits particles, during neutron bombardment, which ionise the gas between 1 and 2. To maintain the sensitivity of the device constant, the burn-up of 15 is compensated by the increase in neutron transmission through the coatings 16, 17, 18 as the latter are burnt away by the neutron flux and thus absorb fewer neutrons. Boron 10 or uranum 235 may be used for layer 15. A pumping stem 12 is provided for evacuating the casing 4, and subsequently refilling with a gas.
