Abstract

1487358 Vapour depositing radio-active materials COMMISSARIAT A'LENERGIE ATOMIQUE 13 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 53981/74 Heading C7F [Also in Division G6] A sealed source of ionizing radiation for e.g. fire alarms, lightning conductors, detecting combustion gases or eliminating static electricity comprises a layer (10 to 1000 Š thick) of e.g. plutonium oxide, curium or americium vapour deposited or sputtered on a substrate of e.g. Ni, and then heated in oxygen (900 to 1300‹C) to oxidise the substrate which diffuses through the radio-active layer to form an inert coating. The protective oxide layer is less than 10 microns for a source emitting α rays, and less than 200 microns for a source emitting γ or # rays.
