Abstract

In a process where molten metal and an oxidant are fed into a hot chamber contg. molten slag, and the refined metal and the used slag leave the chamber by separate outlets, the used slag is continuously removed, regenerated, heated to the desired temp., and returned to the chamber, thus making the process continuous. During regeneration of the slag, undesirable impurities are removed, and gas is blown into the chamber to speed the process. The pref. mfg. plant uses a chamber with a removable roof, and with two connections to an arc furnace where the slag is regenerated; the top of the chamber has a grid dividing the incoming molten metal into streams and a porous inlet in the base or gas fed in by press. Used for iron and steel mfr., e.g. iron for making nodular cast iron and steel castings with low impurity content suitable for use at sub-zero service temps.
