Abstract

The gas emission is obtained by an electrical discharge obtained in response to a progressive current wave propogated between the ends of the laser cavity. The laser has an insulating plate (1) between two parallel metal electrode plates (2, 3) at least one of which is divided into two separate parts by an aperture (6) one edge of the plates (2, 3) being in the form of a parabola, the axis of which is at an angle to the latter aperture (6). The aperture (6) is closed by an insulating strip (9) attached to the divided plate (2) to form the gas cavity. A discharge circuit for providing a progressive current wave along the cavity, defined by the parabolic function, comprises two conductors (17, 18) each connected to one of the electrode plates (2, 3) at the centre (F, F) of the parabolic edge, with the other ends (19, 20) of the conductors spaced to form a discharge gap.
