Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable application of high voltage to a silent discharge type gas laser and obtain a stable high output laser beam in the laser for producing silent discharge with a low voltage side electrode and a dielectric electrode confronting the low voltage electrode by coating an insulating film on the portion except the main discharge portion of the dielectric electrode. CONSTITUTION:A metallic electrode 12 and a dielectric electrode 14 disposed on the electrode 12 are confronting in a container 10, and a grounding wire 40 is connected through an insulating port 42 provided at the wall of the container 10 to the electrode 12 to become ground potential at the electrode 12. A high voltage wire 44 made of a conductor 46 and an insulator 48 is connected to the dielectric electrode 14 made of metallic electrode 26, and connected through a high voltage bushing 50 to an AC power supply. An electrode 26 is formed in hollow shape, and coolant inflowing pipes 52, 54 are connected through the port 42 to the electrode 26 to cool the electrode 26. In this manner, high voltage is applied to the electrodes 12, 14 to produce silent discharge in the discharge space 16. At this time the essential discharging portion 14b of the electrode 14 is exposed, and the other surface is coated with an insulating film 56.
