Abstract
1,180,055. Discharge-treatment of surfaces. D. ERBEN. 16 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 2157/67. Heading H1X. The surface of an artificial material such as a plastics or other dielectric material 5 is modified to increase its adhesive qualities by treatment with a discharge produced between electrodes 11 and 12 so as to contact the surface, but of insufficient intensity to heat the material to a weldable condition. The discharge may be pressed on to the surface by an additional external force, e.g. a magnetic or electric field, or a gas flow to which liquid, gaseous or pulverized additives may be supplied to coat the surface. Plastics surfaces may be treated to improve the adhesive qualities or may be heated for welding purposes. Metal surfaces may be treated, e.g. coated with plastics. The arrangement shown comprises a coaxial cable 6 with interrupted inner conductor 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and outer conductor 8, 8<SP>1</SP>. High voltage is applied to electrode 11 by way of the capacitive coupling 7-8<SP>1</SP>-7<SP>1</SP>. Electrode 12 is earthed by a connection 16 to outer conductor 8. Tubes for the supply of gas may be provided on two sides of the arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) and an insulating cover may enclose the whole unit which may be held in the hand. For treating large surfaces a number of the units may be mounted side-by-side, or an alternative construction (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown) may be used in which two rows of electrode pins are capacitively coupled to metal plates connected to a high voltage source, both pins and plates being embedded in layers of dielectric material forming an elongated open chamber to which gas is admitted. An earthed wire (24) extends along the chamber opening between the rows of pins. An equivalent construction is described (Fig. 8, not shown) in which the electrode pins and plates are provided by the inner and outer conductors of two rows of coaxial cables. In further modifications (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) one or several auxiliary electrodes are provided to initiate the discharge and an additional electrode is provided below the workpiece to attract the discharge to the surface.
