Abstract
Preservative for silage, contg. Ca or Na formate, either as a fine powder or in aq. soln. and opt. Ca or Na, propionate, Ca or Na acetate, an acid phosphate, and trace elements, which is more effective in preventing butyric fermentation than other methods, gives a prod. which is palatable and a high protein value, consists of (by % wt) Ca or Na formate 60-90, Ca or Na propionate 0.6-1, Ca or Na acetate 0.2-0.5, Acid phosphoate, e.g. monocalcium phosphate 6-15, crystalline MgSO4 (or calcined magnesia) 2-30 (0.5-10), iron sulphate monohydrate 0-1, copper sulphate monohydrate 0.20-0.25, zinc sulphate monohydrate 0.010-1.5, manganese sulphate monohydrate 0.030-1, cobalt sulphate monohydrate 0.005-0.015. The formate is the preservative agent, preventing butyric fermentation. The propionate acts as an antimycotic agent. The phospahte serves to acidify the forage immediately the mixture is applied, and the trace elements are added to correct specific deficiencies in the silage.
