Abstract

An aqueous solution of a salt of clavulanic acid with the exception of the calcium salt is treated with a cation exchanger resin in the form of the calcium salt. The calcium diclavulanate which is formed is eluted from the exchanger resin, resulting in a solution of calcium diclavulanate which is virtually free of cations other than calcium ions. Calcium diclavulanate dihydrate is allowed to crystallise out of the resulting solution and is isolated in crystalline form. The resulting salt is suitable as active component in pharmaceutical compositions, especially for oral administration. [GB1561395A]
