Abstract

Circumferential double walled flexible multiply seal integrally constructed with the reactor and bridging the interspace between the reactor pressure vessel and surrounding concrete forms a radial or upper containment which can be water filled when required to materialise a radiation shield affording safe access to the reactor vessel. The seal is structurally compatible with the thermal parameters of the reactor and the prevailing geophysical conditions in addition to its capacity to withstand the hydrostatic head. Integral interspace pipework is provided to monitor seal leakage.
