Abstract

The parent patent describes passing a knitted web through a steam chamber and depositing it in a pleated configuration on a perforated conveyor which is vibrated to continually cause the web to jump off the conveyor and allow it to contract. In the improvement the conveyor is vibrated by a number of rods of polygonal cross-section which are arranged beneath the upper rim of the conveyor and which are vibrated and rotated (by e.g. a crank mechanism), an associated perforated intermediate screen being arranged between the conveyor and the associated rod. Each intermediate screen is moveable pref. in both the same and opposite direction as the conveyor, and the active length of each screen is such that its resonant frequency is higher than the frequency of the fibration set up by the rods to prevent resonance in the conveyor. Wear on the screen and other moving parts is minimised. The screen can be vibrated at a frequency of about 50 H.
