Abstract
In a vertical, cylindrical, refractory, mixing chamber, a rising, vertical, axial stream of auxiliary gas usually atmospheric air, carries an atomised cooling liq. e.g. water, to vapourise as it mixed with a co current, surrounding flow of hot gas. Pref. the auxiliary gas stream is inserted into the chamber with a lower kinetic energy than that of the surrounding hot gas. Pref. also the propn. of cooling liq. atomised into the auxiliary gas stream is automatically related to the temp. of the cooled gas mixt. at the chamber outlet. The process is for cooling very hot gas carrying suspended corrosive agents, partic. powders. The cooler is esp. applicable to cooling exhaust gases from incinerators burning household rubbish, dried sewage etc. from is approx. 900 degrees C is approx. 350 degrees so that the gas can be cycloned to separate entrained solids. The refractory walls of the mixing chamber are protected from thermal shock which occurs if cold liq. contacts the walls. The atomised liquid is centred inside the hot gas flow and with a kinetic energy differential to hold it there. Full vapourisation takes place before droplets reach a wall.
