Abstract
A resin, pref. urea-formaldehyde, with high viscosity and low solvent content, which either has a high pH or contains added alkali, is mixed with an emulsifier and a blowing agent and emulsified. An acid catalyst, opt. mixed with a blowing agent inert to acid, is then added, causing further reaction of the resin and the formaldehyde and an increase in temp. which causes blowing the occur. The resin, emulsifier and blowing agent are pref. emulsified for a long period before adding alkali, to cause some pre-polymsn without blowing, resulting in a less brittle foam. Setting of the foam occurs very quickly e.g in around 2s. The foams of carrying density can be used as impact-absorbing cushions, non-flammable building boards, fire-retardant separating walls, pipe insulation and for spraying on water surfaces as a barrier to contain oil pollution.
