Abstract
1357346 Urea-formaldehyde foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 June 1971 [15 July 1970] 34311/70 Heading C3C [Also in Division B2] At least the surface of open-celled ureaformaldehyde foams are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble silicate. Sodium silicate solution is the preferred impregnant. Additionally the aqueous solution may contain zinc oxide. The solution may be applied to the foam by brushing or spraying. In an example a block of foam was prepared by foaming a urea-formaldehyde resin containing about 64% solids using compressed air as blowing agent and H 3 PO 4 as curing agent. 4 inch cubes cut from this block are painted with a 5% aqueous solution of sodium silicate. The product after drying is firm and non-friable. It finds use as insulation tiles, building blocks and barriers capable of absorbing kinetic energy.
