Abstract

A number of multi-filament thermoplastic yarns are made into a bundle, and shaped into a rod at near the softening pt. of the material. The rod is dipped in a soln. of heat-setting resin in a volatile solvent and passed through a fluorocarbon tube to exclude the surrounding atmos., in which it is heated to evaporate most of the solvent and gel the resin. The latter is set by a second heat treatment. The multi-filament yarn is pref. of 30-210 den., made from polyester filaments of 2-10 den. and strongly crimped. The resin is pref. a polyurethane or epoxide type and the first heating is by high frequency. The rod. obtained has fine longitudinal capillaries, which carry aq. inks at the required rate from the reservoir to the ball. Use of low viscosity inks instead of usual pastes reduces the pressure necessary for writing and the tendency for the mark to be transferred to other surfaces in contact with it.
