Abstract
1,152,342. Reservoir pens. SCRIPTO Inc. 16 May, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 21596/66. Heading A4K. [Also in Divisions B5, C4 and D1] A porous writing tip for a reservoir pen is made from resin-bonded tows of bulked or textured polyester filaments. In a continuous process, several tows, of stretched Dacron (R.T.M.), are drawn off a creel and pulled upwardly through a dilute solution of epoxy resin dissolved in a mixture of xylene and methyl ethyl ketone. The loose bundle of impregnated tows passes through a heated drying tube and is then pulled through a forming die heated sufficiently to melt the resin without weakening the fibres. The resulting porous rod is pulled through a dilute aqueous solution of an ethylamine complex of borontrifluoride containing a wetting agent. It then enters a precuring oven in which it is dried and the complex decomposed to enable borontrifluoride to effect the initial curing. 4.4<SP>1</SP> dihydroxy-diphenol 2.2<SP>1</SP> propane may be used as an accelerator. The partially cured rod is cut into sections and placed in a final curing oven. It is thereafter pointed by grinding. In the assembled pen, the writing tip may be in contact with loosely packed, cemented, cellulose acetate capillary reservoir material, saturated in one of a number of specified ink compositions (see Division C4).
