Process comprises coating the pattern surface with a thin metal layer which is in electrical contact with an electrical lead, making the pattern the cathode in an electroforming bath and plating it to the required thickness, sepg. the electroplate from the pattern and using it as a finished tool or as an electrode in a further plating bath for prodn. of another electrode or a tool. The thin coating is esp. of Ag applied from a colloidal soln. in a volatile carrier. Impurities are added or are present in the electroforming bath(s) and are selected from NH3, Cl and metal salts, Ni prods. obtd. from the impure baths can be hardened at 375-425 (395-405) degrees C for use in forging or pressing unhardened steels. The method is used for prodn. of spark erosion tools, electroforming tools, pressing and forming tools and the like.
