Abstract

A perforated plate column for countercurrent contacting of immiscible fluids with differing densities, gas and/or liq., (as in absorption or extraction); is of type modified to reduce back mixing, (by introducing baffles so that inlet to stage inlet from one upriser, is above outlet to the other); but also has an orifice to equilibrate pressures on either side of plate, and a sloping partition between contacting and decanting zones; so that flow of heavy component through plate is not interfered with, even at high flow rates, by pressure drop across contacting zone.
