Abstract

An ethylene - vinyl ester copolymer is alcoholised in a medium contg. a hydrocarbon solvent, a low - boiling alcohol and an alkaline or acid catalyst, with a total initial water content of 1 - 10,000 (50 - 500) ppm; the water content is controlled during the entire reaction and during later treatment, to be within plus-or-minus 50% (plus-or-minus 20%) of the initial content. A partially hydrolysed copolymer with a controllable, predetermined residual vinyl ester content is obtd. The prod. is pure, contains only small amounts of catalyst residues, and is not discoloured. Films of pre-determined permeability to gases and vapours, membranes of constant selectivity, and powder layers applied from a fluidised bed can be produced. Polymers with controlled OH content are used in adhesives.
